To what extent perceptions are grounded in reality?
What are the challenges of war, jihad and global terrorism?
Most of the individual Muslims who are best known in today’s Europe are not Western European Muslims but Middle Eastern Muslims such as Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. The public visibility of Muslims in Western Europe is in part a function of the public visibility of the Muslim world, and especially of the Middle East. And what is most visible is conflict. This roundtable discussion asks why. We will look at political and cultural relations between Western Europe and the Muslim world.
Speaker
Mark Sedgwick is a professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at Aarhus University in Denmark. He was born in England, trained as a historian, and taught for twenty years at the American University in Cairo. He works on religious and political history, with an emphasis on intercultural relations, Sufism, and terrorism. Among his recent publications are an article on “Anti-Colonial Terrorism: Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood to 1954,” and his Western Sufism: Origins and Development, 833-1968 is forthcoming with Oxford University Press.
