In this roundtable, Humeira Iqtidar challenges the general assumption that while Islamists who change the moral character and public sphere through Islamizing the society are anti-secular and conservative. Contrary to such a stereotypical view of Islamists, Iqtidar argues that Islamists, particularly in Pakistan, have contributed to the secularization of Pakistani society, even as they staunchly oppose secularism. This approach and point of view does not entail the production of a liberal secular model or a separation of religion and politics, however as the Islamists are thoroughly the products of modernity, the Islamists in some way shape some Islamist narratives and values within secularization paradigm. Some of these questions will be on the table for discussion:
What is mean to be a secular Islamist?
Will Islamists be able to reinvent a secular-religious government?
How has liberal politics affect Islamists’ understanding of relation between Islam and state ?
Is secularization for these Islamists an extension of rationalization?
About the speaker:
Dr. Humeira Iqtidar joined King’s College London in 2011. She has studied at the University of Cambridge (UK), McGill University (Canada) and Quaid-e-Azam University (Pakistan). Before joining King’s, Humeira was based at the University of Cambridge as a fellow of King’s College and the Centre of South Asian Studies. She is a co-convenor of the London Comparative Political Theory Workshop. Humeira’s research explores the shifting demarcations of state, market and society in political imagination, and their relationship with Islamic thought and practice. He current research focuses on non-liberal conceptions of tolerance. Humeira’s research has featured in interviews and articles in The Guardian, BBC World Service, Voice of America, Der Spiegel, Social Science Research Council Online, The Dawn, Express Tribune and Open Democracy.
